Curatorial Statement
I am looking to bring together artists whose work is part of the current resurgence of pattern and decoration movement, and that embody the aesthetic of optimism, through vivid use of color. This era of this movement responds to the white washing minimalism of gentrification aesthetics, a continuation of exclusionary Western art narrative. Maximalism and color vibrancy offer a reference back to folk art, craft, and universally indigenous ways of visually extending necessities in the realm of craft and art. This group show aims to depict the crossover of optimism represented through play and vibrancy, with the dystopian futurism that is reflected through the unnatural, non-human fluorescence, post modern design, and distortion of heavily contextualized patterns.
The works are largely drawn with an interest in function, and craft. This iteration of Hot House especially pays homage to the Pattern and Decoration movement Painters, such as Lucas Samaras, Cynthia Carlson and Judy Pfaff. The work of this movement was centered around painting, which we see has evolved in the current resurgence of this movement into craft materials. This show hopes to incapacitate the way the original Pattern and Decoration Movement has left its impact and continues to bring attention to a more complex visual language that is all too often rejected by the narrow expression of the world's elite.
The consumer market in late stage capitalism has more interest in hand made objects and more intention in the objects that occupy their spaces.
A nod to the existential nature of artistic practice also lives in the work; where in the work that carries function often more than not is more so about the object, about the function rather than leading in a prioritization of utility.
